Trap-Neuter-Return: caring for and eliminating reproduction in feral cat colonies
If you care for outdoor cats in your neighborhood, thank you for being a good neighbor! By registering your colony with Nevada Humane Society, you help to ensure that any efforts to TNR cats in the area are complete, effective, and take YOUR expert knowledge on these cats and their home into account. There is no way for TNR to truly make a difference in the feral cat population without the help of people living with and caring for these cats.
Due to severe staffing and volunteer shortages for the Community Cat Program, it is the responsibility of caretakers and their neighbors to work together on these projects. Going forward, we may also ask for your help with caring for and housing cats for multi-day trapping events. This might seem like an overwhelming amount of work, but the more people that are involved, the easier it is!
For more information on Nevada Humane Society’s Community Cat Program, please explore the additional pages on this site. You can also call us at 775-856-2000 ext. 337 or email communitycats@nevadahumanesociety.org (preferred).
*** JANUARY 2022 UPDATE ****
Going forward, NHS will only be able to provide surgeries on Wednesdays. Like all clinics, we are experiencing the same national shortage of veterinary professionals. We encourage you to reach out to Options Veterinary Care (4690 Longley Ln Ste 1, Reno, NV 89502; 775-499-3700; 8am-5pm Mon-Fri) for additional TNR needs. They offer TNR on a walk-in basis, two cats at a time, on Tuesdays for $25/cat.
If you are aware of other clinics in the area willing to provide TNR services (SPECIFICALLY for feral cats, using traps and squeeze cages for anesthesia and safe handling), please reach out and keep us updated! Whatever resources exist, we want to help connect people to them.
